I assume you’re getting sushi quality fish (at least $ 30/lb), NOT fresh fish from the grocery store! If you go to an Asian market, they’ll have the nori there too – but you can probably find it on the Asian aisle of any major grocery store. I actually prefer sashimi – just slices of raw octopus or tuna – no rice.

I made my own sushi with my boyfriend: http://chewonthatblog.com/2009/02/17/on-making-our-own-sushi/
It was so much fun but we sort of failed at the sushi rice part. We bought nori from our local grocery store. The ethnic section should have it! Or, a fresh sushi grade fish vendor might have nori as well.
I personally love salmon or tuna sushi. We went with salmon rolls with slices of cucumber, avocado and mango! It was great!
Do you have a Whole Foods close to you? You can get nori there. They also sell sushi ready to go and it is great.
If I remember right California Farm also would have nori and you can buy great sushi made for you.
I don’t like any raw fish, everything else, I love.
I’d just go to a local seafood vendor not necessarily your local grocery store but someone who specializes in it. I love spicy scallop and roe is so tasty….it’s like a cheaper version of caviar.
I love Mitsuwa Marketplace in Edgewater. It’s a Japanese supermarket that will have everything you need and more!

I really like this recipe for sushi rice:

And as for what I like in my sushi, anything fresh! I enjoy maguro (tuna), toro (fatty tuna), uni (sea urchin–very creamy!), hamachi (yellow tail), ikura (salmon roe), ika (squid), etc.
